Microsoft teases a ‘next generation of Windows’
Microsoft isn’t talking about its big Windows plans at Build 2021 this week, and that’s because the company is preparing to detail what’s next for its PC operating system separately. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella teased this announcement during his Build keynote this morning, revealing he has been testing “the next generation of Windows” in recent months.

HEIC Files
I received a file that Windows would not open. It turns out that an HEIC file contains one or more images saved in the High Efficiency Image Format (HEIF), a file format most commonly used to store photos on iOS devices. There is an extension that allows them to be opened in Windows 10. Here is an article that shows how to do that:

Windows Update Message

What are the possibilities that are causing this message?

The error, which is displayed on a blue screen, usually occurs when Windows Update fails. This can happen either due to files not being downloaded properly or other reasons like corrupted system files. Some of the well-known factors include:
  • Incomplete download
  • Lack of sufficient disk space
  • Corruption of system files
The Windows update was interrupted during the installation of files.

21H1 Available 5-18-2021
There are only a handful of new features in Windows 10 21H1, including support for multiple Windows Hello-enabled cameras; Windows Defender Application Guard improvements, and improvements in Windows Management Instrumentation via Group Policy. The new Chromium-based Edge browser also is available as part of today's 21H1 release. Like Windows 10 2004 and 20H2, Windows 10 21H1 is a minor feature update. For users already running 2004 or 20H2, Windows 10 21H1 will install quickly -- and hopefully, painlessly -- thanks to an enablement package that will activate the new features.

Shift-Right-Click
You can create a shortcut to just about anything on your computer. If you can pin it to the Taskbar, then you can create a shortcut for it on Desktop.

Once pinned to the Taskbar, Shift-Right-click it and choose More in the Context menu. There will be a “Create shortcut” option waiting for you.

Word Processing Basics
Some of us are using Microsoft Word. Others have a variety of other applications from using Google Docs, to LibreOffice (OpenOffice), to WordPerfect, and others. (Click for a list of 25 Best FREE Word Processor | Word Processing Software in 2021)

They all work in a similar way to achieve the task of us writing down or even dictating our thoughts onto a piece of paper or document held on our computer or in the cloud somewhere for others to read.

Let’s look at the many tasks each of us should have a handle on to work with our word processor. We can fight with it to get the job done. Or we can learn enough so that the job is easily done and the application is working for us rather than us working for it.

We will look at the basic functions and see how they apply across the following applications: MS Word, LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs, and AbiWord.

Subjects covered in the video include:
  • Menus vs. Ribbons
  • File Formats
  • Save/SaveAs
  • Page Setup
  • Fonts/Size
  • Color
  • Three Nevers
  • Copy/Paste vs Drag
  • Margins/Tabs
  • Random Text
  • Hyperlinks

  • Printing

How to See (and Delete) All of Your Google Activity
Most of us use Google for almost everything: Navigation, scheduling, shopping, games, research, and of course, search. We search for recipes, vacation destinations, historical facts, medical information, news stories, and almost every piece of information a human living in 2021 might ever need to know. It’s all on Google.

How to Add Captions to Images in Google Docs

It’s easy to add an image to your document in Google Docs, but including a caption is another story. Until Google adds a caption feature to Docs, here are a few ways you can create and add captions to your photos.
https://tinyurl.com/ej36v2ps

I still like to use the Paint program to add captions to an image.

  • Win+Q and type Paint.
  • Press Enter
  • Paste the image
  • Drag down a section under the picture
  • Use the A to insert the caption

Maintenance Update

Instead of using ninite.com, I am using Patch My PC to update the programs on my PC. When you run it, it looks at all your programs and if any are included in the 300 programs available through PMP, it checks to see that you have the latest version and if not, downloads and installs the latest without any questions or extra apps just like ninite does. PCM has many more programs available.

Simply stated, here is what I recommend you do once a week.
  • Run Patch My Pc to update your maintenance programs
  • Run SuperAntispyware
  • Run Malwarebytes
  • Run Wise Disk cleaner
If any of your non-Windows programs call for an update, just run PCM to do the update for you. Then you will not have any questions to answer or have to be careful of installing any extra apps.

I just wrote a 2021 update to the Running the Maintenance Programs white paper and here it is:

Talking to Customer Service
How often do we call a CS line and have to answer 20 questions to a computer before getting to speak to a human being? Sometimes we never get to one. This site gives you the path you need to find a person.

Truecaller App
With the Truecaller app, both calls and text messages can be blocked. Truecaller is able to identify and flag unknown numbers with its caller ID. This app also has the capability to automatically identify every unknown SMS. After downloading the app, it will ask you to enable phone permissions for Truecaller to work. If you allow Truecaller to block text messages, it will create a separate folder for Spam or Junk text messages received in your messaging app. You can look up numbers to identify who they are with Truecaller as well. Truecaller is a free app and is available in the Google Play Store for Androids and the App Store for iPhones.

Desktop Shortcuts
Many times we install a new program and we never get an icon on the desktop. Sometimes it does not even appear on the Start menu.
  • Win+Q to open Type here to search
  • Type the name of the program
  • It appears selected on top of the list, right-click it
  • Choose Open file location
  • Right-drag the file to the Desktop
  • Let go and choose to Create shortcut here
Xfinity Flex Remote
Xfinity Flex lets you easily access all your favorite apps and networks, including Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Prime Video, Paramount+, Spotify, HBO Max, and more. You also have access to over 10,000 free shows and movies, including 200 channels, from free apps like XUMO, Tubi, and Pluto.

What services do I get with Choice TV with Xfinity Flex compared to other Xfinity TV products?

Zoom’s New Immersive Mode
With more people working from home, video conference calls have become a new normal. But video calls still aren’t the same as an in-person meeting, and Zoom hopes to bridge some of that gap with a new Immersive Mode. It changes the call to make everyone appear to be in the same room.

Can Browser Extensions See My Bank Account?
Extensions add a wide variety of functionality to web browsers. In order for them to be able to do what we want them to, they need access to almost everything, often including the complete contents of the web pages we view. Extensions from trusted and reputable sources limit their activities to what they promise, even though they could do much, much more. Extensions from elsewhere? There’s no real way to know.

What’s New in Windows 10’s May 2021 Update (21H1)
Windows 10’s May 2021 Update, also known as 21H1, began rolling out to the Release Preview channel on April 28, 2021. Like the 20H2 update, this is a smaller update that focuses on security improvements and polish. The big features originally planned for 21H1 have been delayed to 21H2 in late 2021.

Can’t I Just Copy Everything to Back Up?
Sure. You can do that: just copy everything. It provides a level of protection, and it’s significantly better than doing nothing at all. But your safety net has some extremely large holes in it. There are things a “copy everything” backup misses that a traditional backup program would catch — things you’ll really care about when the worst happens.

Why Is My Backup Showing I Have 677 GB to back up?

I have done this also. I choose the Windows 10 system and click Proceed without Browsing (the arrow) to my external drive. By not changing the Destination, the backup file is placed on my C: drive and NOT on the external drive. The backup finishes Successfully but the actual file is on the C: drive and not the external drive. The next time you backup all of C: is backed up including the backup file that was placed on the C: drive in error. Pretty soon your hard drive fills up and you do not have a backup on the external drive to recover from. Make sure you click on Browse and locate the correct drive to hold your backup file BEFORE clicking on Proceed.
